Bom Jesus do Monte

At Bom Jesus do Monte you can find religious, baroque, rococo and neoclassical architecture. It is one of the most visited places in Braga. Among endless staircases, fountains, statues, you will find the oldest funicular in the world, opened in 1882 and nowadays it is still working. The Bom Jesus Sanctuary was classified as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2019.

D. Diogo de Sousa Museum

Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa is responsible for the name of this museum, due to all urban changes he made in the city of Braga and all his attempts to protect the vestiges of the Roman occupation. In 1918 the D. Diogo de Sousa Museum emerged and on June 29, 2007 it was opened to the public in Braga city, but which was once called “Bracara Augusta”.

Braga’s Cathedral is one of the most important buildings of the city and the oldest Portuguese cathedral, it was built when Portugal was not even a country yet. Palácio do Raio

The Palácio do Raio or Casa do Mexicano, is one of the most important works of Baroque architecture, by the famous André Soares. The name Palácio do Raio has its origins in one of its owners, Miguel José Raio, when he acquired it in 1835. It is currently the Interpretive Center for Memories of the Misericórdia de Braga, where it is possible to travel through the history of Santa Casa.

Biscainhos Museum

This museum is located in the Palácio dos Biscainhos, founded in the 17th century and converted into a museum in 1978. The visit will allow you to understand the daily life of the aristocracy, as well as of those who lived there, such as servants and slaves. You will also have the opportunity to observe decorative arts, musical instruments, means of transport, paintings, among other pieces that will make you travel from the 17th century to the 19th century.

Sameiro Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro, the highest point of the city, consists of a basilica, squares, gardens, a crypt and a long staircase with 256 steps. Here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Gerês, Cabreira, Penha and Franqueira. This sanctuary suffer several changes since 1863, the year of its construction, due to the large affluence of visitors.

Largo do Paço

The “Largo do Paço” has four buildings which, in the past, were the archbishops’ residence. Nowadays, they are occupied by the Minho University’ Noble Hall, Braga’s Public Library and by the Municipal Archive. Right in the center of “Largo do Paço” is the “Chafariz dos Castelos”.

Braga’s Castle Tower

The old Braga’s Castle had 5 towers that were lookout points on the medieval walls. Nowadays, there’s only one of them with about 30 meters, however, there are remains of the old castle which were reused by the buildings around.

Theatro Circo

The Theatro Circo was firstly imagined in 1906 by Artur José Soares, José António Veloso e Cândido Martins, however, its construction only started in 19011 by João Coutinho and it was opened to the public four years later. Its name is due to the fact the city used to have circuses frequently.

Arco da Porta Nova

The Arco da Porta Nova, which never had a door, was built in 1512 by Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa. There are some questions on who designed the current version of the Arco da Porta Nova, the most referred names are André Soares and Carlos Amarante. The popular expression "Are you from Braga?", has its origin in this monument and it is typically used when someone leaves a door open.
